Social Globalization

It plays a big role on my life

Social Globalization has a big impact on how I and my friends and family live our lives. While it may seem that it doesn’t really affect us because we live in Canada it truly does have a large impact on our lives. It is present all around us whether we recognize it or not. To name a few examples we have

  • Media, A large part of the media we consume is either American or from elsewhere in the world
  • Pop Culture, because we are so dependant on Globalized media we often are caught up with the pop culture of other countries. This also comes from the many Role Models we have from other countries.
  • Culture and Diversity, as Canada is a multicultural country there is a lot of diversity and this has a big affect on my life.

Because of the aforementioned reasons my life is surrounded by Social Globalization.

Media from around the world and Pop culture

The media we consume as Canadians is predominantly from around the world and not local. Furthermore our pop culture is mostly a hybridization from other countries around the world. This is because of globalization with media technologies has made it extremely easy to access media from around the world. This has a big impact on my life as it means that the majority of the media I consume is produced globally. For example often instead of watching tv I will watch certain youtube channels that are created around the world that easily rival and often beat local shows quality wise, Like right now I am listening to Sibelius Violin Concerto performed by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra in europe, something that I would rarely be able to experience here in Calgary. Another examples is fads that happen in American pop culture will almost immediately enter the popular culture here in Canada.

 Multiculturalism and Diversity

Here in Canada we have a huge amount of diversity and Multiculturalism. Because of this in my daily life I experience numerous cultures and the viewpoints they bring with them. While these cultures are often “watered down” due to assimilation, virtually non are affected by marginalization. This is because even though many cultures have very different traditions there is very little conflict due to Canadians being very willing to use accommodation to help other culture quickly adapt to Canadian culture while still affirming their own individual and collective identity.
